Being prepared is a lifestyle for me, also. As women, we can be targeted as weaker prey. Many typical "manly" skills are necessary for self-defense and self-sufficiency. Shooting, knives, hand-to-hand, mechanical and electrical skills, equipment operation, and welding are all skills often left to men. The confidence that comes with knowing you are a strong human absolutely changes the way you walk.
Got to remember as we age, from our age 20's to older, we must adapt.
Reflexes, so using a gun you need to modify how you target. Fine pistol shooting degrades and sometimes a shotgun may work better. You have to do your own research to see what works for you. Hopefully you can find a trusted friend that can help.
Simple hand to hand moves are best, not spending years of strip mall karate in street fighting, many got beat up from sport karate.
Thanks for the link. I am of an age where I have different weapons for different scenarios. Running and fighting up close are last resort. Like Marjorie, I hope I never have to use what I know.
I saw the subject, and just having bought one of those "Matsato" knives, I was interested to see the VW demo with it.
The other thing I thought of was that clip when Crocodile Dundee is on a date and a mugger whips out a knife, and he pulls out his large bush knife and says "This is a knife!"
I don't need that to harvest bananas. A 5-in fruit knife can do the job. Just make v-shape notches in the stem and with enough notches, the trunk bows nicely and the leaves cushion the bunch. A stool if placed right will stop the trunk.. I can't find a Victorinox semi-flex knife anywhere and then I discovered that a fruit knife flexes beautifully.
I only like knives with full tangs. Better still if I can baton it. Even then I have been cheated a couple of times when the knife gave way and revealed just a skeletal tang inside the handle.

This is an option, simple to learn, don't make any money this, but have taken the course.

Took the last live machete class. The machete is well worth the money for a self defense back up tool.
When you do use it, it won't matter about law after the SHTF happens, but choose wisely.
With his parents working in a convenience store, my student was reassured by heat-packing grannies.
Grannies packing heat at the convenience stores in Texas way impressed my student in Mexico. Heat on the hip--obvious.

The GUARDIAN G5 MACHETE is a machete's machete.
Any weapon you choose to use, be sure you're really good with it. Otherwise it could be used on you.

Interesting... in the bush I only cary a 4" or 5" fixed blade. It's all I ever really use.
But oh my do I love the thick tang on that machete.
